Project Description

Faced with the difficult task of refurbishing the historic Great Hall, originally constructed in 1896, and the home of the Rocket Theatre, Norlands needed a building services contractor to work alongside them who were able to come up with solutions the unique problems this project presented.

The Electrical Scope

Key to this development was a lighting scheme which would emphasise the beauty of the Great Hall’s original classic proportions, while at the same time drawing attention to the ornate plasterwork painstakingly restored by Norlands specialists.

We decided on the use of ‘Trilux’ luminaires in the vaulted ceiling of the Great Hall, with ACDC LED colour changing floodlights along the perimeter. The problem of locating the luminaires in the original apertures in the vaulted ceiling of the Great hall was overcome with the production of a purpose made steel fixing ring system. The Dali lighting control system supplied by ‘Control Lighting Ltd’ was chosen to interact with the Universities AV system.

A design collaboration between ourselves and Norlands led to the enhancement of the refurbished balustrade upstand at the rear of the Great Hall which can be clearly seen in the photograph of the completed job.

The Mechanical Scope

The mechanical Element of this prestigious project was to not only reconfigure the domestic hot and cold water services to the bar and WC’s but to also design and Install an aesthetically pleasing duct work installation to supply the high vaulted ceiling space with temperature controlled fresh air.

A bespoke AHU unit was carefully positioned by a crane, on to the roof of the rocket theatre with external thermally insulated ducts to interface with the supply and extract grills of the great hall. The AHU is a standalone package unit with an interface to the house BMS system. This not only aids monitoring but also provides set point adjustment. This feature was a requirement of the end user as they needed a theatre with a capacity of 400 people through all seasons.  A luxury the previous installation lacked.

Project Completion

The project was completed safely, on programme and on budget as well as meeting the clients SKA requirements.
