Project Description

Voltage Optimization Installation at TELSTRA INTERNATIONAL in Canary Wharf, London.

TELSTRA is one of leading Co-location space providers. The site in Canary Wharf includes both office space and Data Hall space. The site is supplied by four transformers.

The challenge, the solution and the savings

The electrical load in the data halls were dominated by the mechanical plant keeping the areas cooled to the correct temperature for the IT equipment, but also included lighting - which was the principle load in the office space. Following a process of evaluation to confirm both the level of optimization and suitability of the TELSTRA site, a 3200kVA Energy Saving Regulator (ESS) unit was installed in the winter of 2011. This enabled the voltage to be set & then regulated at all times even during periods of fluctuation, unlike some of our competitors who utilise a basic fixed tap devise.

Topline results

We were delighted to see savings in the region of 9% in kWh consumption at TELSTRA INTERNATIONAL. This equates to an annual saving of 3974 tonnes of carbon emissions. Powersave technology also made sure that the site now operates more efficiently, benefits from improved power quality and is protected against common transients (power spikes). All this was achieved with a minimum of disruption – important to any Co-location space business. The Powersave units need no maintenance beyond the statutory 5 yearly checks required of all electrical equipment.
